Polar Stars: Experiences In The Arctic
Giving a shout out to the Arctic's chilly best bits is a pretty hard sell at the best of times, even trickier with summer just around the corner. However, despite the bobbing icebergs lined up against me I'm going to give it a shot.
For millennia, the halo of icy water at the top of the world has been traversed and explored by only the hardiest of our civilisation. Inhabitants who've settled the shores of it's southern rim or those who've crafted a living on the frozen rock of the North Pole, have left fascinating footprints. The remnants and ruins from whichever century you choose have been well preserved, most notable being those of the fearsome ocean nomads, the Vikings.
The natural world here is vicious, predators patrol the ice whilst creatures dumbfound expectation and survive in such hostile conditions. For the traveller then, this region holds plenty to get excited about. From whale watching and diving to trekking Greenland's peaks, this top ten will make you forget the sunscreen and have you dreaming of the Northern Lights instead.
